Like Papa always said, “if you don’t fall, you’re not trying hard enough.”
While this was our water skiing mantra, I recently realized the freedom in this statement.
The goal is to push the edge enough to fall, to strive so greatly that new boundaries are created. That’s how I learned to water ski at all. Try hard enough and great enough that I fell… That’s how I learned to cross the wake, drop a ski, slalom, do a dock start, a deep water start and a shore start. Aim high enough to fall at the first attempt…and the second…and…
Because there comes a time when the thing that made us fall the first 3 times doesn’t make us fall anymore and we strive to fall in something new.
