I was giving a presentation on a business webinar the other day and asked two questions of the attendees. A question came back, “why did you ask that?”
The questions were:
- If you could help any gender, which would it be?
- If you could help one ethnicity, which would it be?
The questions were all about being good and helpful and still it was awkward.
Why would I ask questions I knew would create awkwardness?
Political correctness shoves some of our true thoughts and feelings away. I want people to create enough space for their true self to peek out.
What if I had a deep-seated passion to help kids from Rwanda? No where else. Just Rwanda. Is the world going to hate on me because of that?
No!
What if I had a deep-seated passion to help women secure their financial futures? Not men, just women. Is the world going to hate me because of that?
No!
It’s okay if we have preferences and specific niches of people we care about more than others. That’s okay. I repeat, that’s okay.
Let yourself get specific.
