We are taught that the proper way to introduce ourselves to someone is to hold out our hand and say, “Hi, I’m Amy Kauffman.” This works great in some settings but would be a total failure in others. Being able to read the nuances of a social setting is important! We know the proper system, but we read the situation to know when to deviate, and we use instinct and familiarity to know how to deviate from the standard process.
The same is true of business, or cooking, or teaching.
Systems are great. Know when to deviate from them.
