The dream doesn’t shut off

A real dream doesn’t rest because the clock strikes 11pm.

A real dream doesn’t shut off because the weekend comes.

A real dream doesn’t cower when the odds seem impossible.

A real dream doesn’t understand “no.”

A real dream doesn’t know failure.

A real dream isn’t derailed by obstacles, threats or fears.

Do you have a real dream?

do you have dreams?

My heart would pound so hard I could feel it in my ears.

I used to be afraid of being alone in big buildings (church and my work office). It was inconvenient and illogical so I set out to unlearn this fear.

The only way I knew how to unlearn a fear was to stare it square in the face and run it down.

I planned trips to my church at night to play the piano. The parking lot was empty, the entry was dark and no lights were on in the building. It was me against the dark and the space.

I was scared. Really scared. My heart would pound so hard I could feel it in my ears.

I made sure I methodically unlocked the door and turned on the necessary lights to see my way to the auditorium. My insides were freaking out, but I forced myself to act as if I wasn’t afraid.

I walked up the left side of the auditorium to the piano. Single light above my head, I’d pull out the bench and sit down then turn to look at the rest of the room. I was staring down the fear. Recreating the story in my head.

I unlearned the fear of darkness and big spaces. It was a paper tiger. It’s gone now.

What fear do you need to unlearn?

It won’t feel good while you’re unlearning it, but once you stare it square in the face a few times and chase it down, that paper tiger will fall apart and you’ll be so happy you’re not held captive by it anymore.

Waiting is more painful

“Waiting is more painful than having what you fear on board.”

As humans, it seems our hearts and bodies are strong and resilient, more so than our minds.

Waiting and wondering if our fear will become reality is often far worse than the actual reality and having to work through the muck of it. There are exceptions of course, but few.

And what truth is wrapped up in feared realities being “on board.”

Yes, I get it.

You’re frustrated, stuck, annoyed, depressed, restricted, constricted and afflicted.

You’re in debt and in doubt.

You’re weary, worn and weak.

You’re uncertain, mostly certain and absolutely confused.

But can you rise above that?

Can you see your blessings?

Can you see the possibilities?

Can you see opportunities?

When will you rise above the chaos, the ugly and the unknown?

Decide to flourish from this place.

Tell me if I’m wrong on this.

If we predominantly spend time reflecting on the past – curiosity and regret are common.

If we predominantly spend time living in the moment – fear and overwhelm are common.

If we predominantly spend time planning for the future – worry and wondering are common.

Tell me if I’m wrong or missed something major.

Do you dance in the past, present or future?

The mind helps us sort, process and make sense of our lives. What a fabulous resource!

Where do you spend the most time sorting and making sense of things; the past, present or the future?

I recently took inventory of where my thoughts tend to dance, where I use one of my most valuable resources…and my next logical question to myself, is it beneficial where I spend the majority of time processing?

Would you like vulnerability with that transparency, Sir?

The relationship between vulnerability and transparency is unique.

Vulnerability is the idea of opening ourselves up to emotional attack/harm. Transparency is the idea of having our emotions, thoughts and motives easily perceived.

This means I only feel vulnerable when I’m not comfortable with my emotions, thoughts or motives. When I’m comfortable with my emotions, thoughts and motives, I feel strong and confident, not susceptible to harm.

I really like the internal control we have of this one. We decide if we’re transparent or vulnerable in any given moment and situation.

Once over

I put myself through college cleaning houses.

One of my clients was really big on “once overs.” The table didn’t need to be scrubbed, but give it a quick wipe. The shelf didn’t need to have the knick knacks removed for dusting, but give it a quick “once over” to the parts seen.

What should you give a once over that you’re wasting time scrubbing?

What should you give a once over that you’ve completely neglected?

…And we’re not talking Pledge and Windex anymore.
